MISTLETOE Sacred Bough Winter Solstice Soy Pillar Votives

ט׳ בחשון תשע"ב
Phasma Priscus 12

Used by ancient Europeans for over 4000 years, revered by the Druids, MISTLETOE (especially grown on Apple trees) is sacred to the Celtic god Manannán mac Lir. An Irish sea deity, Manannán mac Lir is associated with the Tuatha Dé Danann, the Otherworld, regeneration, weather working, and the mists between the worlds. Manannán mac Lir's Welsh equivalent is Manawydan fab Llyr.

Used to part the mists between the worlds and in other areas of Celtic magic, Pliny the ancient Roman naturalist, tells us how the Druids cut mistletoe on the sixth day after the New Moon at the end of the Celtic Year. Leading two white bulls deep into the sacred Oak Grove, with misteltoe hanging from the boughs of a giant Oak, the Druids would have a ritual meal prior to harvesting the herb. Following the meal, with a golden moon shaped sickle, the chosen Druid would climb up the Oak tree and cut the sacred boughs of mistletoe, which would be caught as they fell into the white robes of the Druids waiting below. The golden moon shaped sickle is symbolic of the feminine, while the mistletoe is symbolic of the masculine, whose milky white berries resemble spermatozoa. The white bulls would be offered up in sacrifice to the spirit of the Oak from which the mistletoe was cut in exchange for the mistletoe, which was considered part of the life essence of the Oak.
