Recipe 1 - Traditional English Flying Ointment

3 grams annamthol
30 grams betel
50 grams extract of opium
6 grams cinquefoil
15 grams henbane
15 grams belladonna
15 grams hemlock
250 grams cannabis Indica
5 grams canthreidin

Blend with oil of your choice of fat, vaseline, safflower oil, or butter.

Recipe 2

The Gardnerian Book of Shadows includes multiple recipes for flying ointments, derived from older works. The traditional English flying ointment includes: 100 grams lard, 5 grams hashish (“first quality”), handful hemp flower, handful poppy flower, pinch powdered hellbore root, and pinch ground sunflower seed.

Recipe 3

Another European recipe calls for 3 grams annamthol, 50 grams extract of opium, 30 grams extract of betel, 6 grams cinquefoul, 15 grams henbane, 15 grams belladonna, 15 grams ordinary hemlock, 250 grams indian hemp (cannabis indica), 5 grams cantharides, gum tragacanth, powdered sugar, and any oil (olive oil recommended) or creme (lanoline recommended).

Recipe 4

1/4 c shea butter (or you can use lard)
1/2 tsp clove oil
1 tsp ash
1/4 tsp dried cinquefoil
1/4 tsp dried mugwort
1/4 tsp dried thistle
1/4 tsp dried vervain
1/2 tsp tincture of benzoin

Using a mortal and pestle, crush the dried herbs until almost powdered. In a small cauldron heat the shea butter/lard over a very low flame until melted completely. Add the herbs, clove oil, and ash and mix well. Add the benzoin (natual preservative), stir it all together clockwise, and then simmer for 10-15 minutes. Strain it through a cheesecloth into a small heat-resistant container, and then allow it to cool. Store it in your refrigerator or in a cool dark place until it is ready to be used.

Recipe 5 - Modern American Flying Ointment

1 jar hand cream
1 tsp. vegetable fat
1/2 tsp. belladonna
3 drops of liquid detergent
1/2 tsp. wolfsbane juice

Mix well with perfume of your choosing

How To Make Offering Stones

Base Recipe 1:

2 cups organic flour
2 cups warm spring water
1 cup sea salt
2 T organic oil (extra virgin olive oil)
1 T cream of tartar

Combine and mix in non-stick pan, cooking on low heat until mixture stops sticking to walls of the pan as wet ingredients evaporate and mixture becomes a clay-like dough (approximately 5 minutes). Remove from heat and let cool. Add creative magical ingredients (herbs, glitter, food coloring, etc.)

Base Recipe 2:

2 cups organic flour
1/2 cup corn meal
2 cups warm spring water
1 cup sea salt
2 T organic oil (extra virgin olive oil)
1 T cream of tartar

The Witch's Herb

Basil, also know as American dittany, is commonly called the witch's herb. Dark opal basil is a spectacular variety of basil with dramatic deep purple, sometimes mottled leaves. A ancient member of the mint family, there are over 150 species of basil. I have a small stock of this gorgeous deep purple variety of the witch's herb!

In the late 1600's, in Salem Massechusetts, basil was planted as a protection against witchcraft. In ancient Greece it was believed that basil could prosper in chaos, especially when it was aligned with misfortune, poverty and hate. Magically, basil has also been planted on graves, used in love potions and flying ointments, and to banish harm, soothe tempers and attract abundant prosperity. It is a classic multifunctional protection, prosperity and love herb.

"Where Basil grows, no evil goes!" and "Where Basil is, no evil lives," the old adages go.

Dark opal basil makes a beautiful pink-purpley vinegar. To make it:

In a glass jar with one quart of white vinegar, add one tightly packed cup of leaves and stems for an infusion - more herb will strengthen the taste, but not the color. If the jar has a screw top, put waxed paper between the jar and the lid. To hasten the infusion, place the jar in a sunny window. Watching the vinegar turn color is fun. The acid in vinegar breaks down the plant material and it will begin to look unsightly. After about a month, strain out and dispose of the basil. A dwarf form of purple basil makes a lovely low border.

Traditional Samhain Barmbrack

I will personally begin gathering up my supplies and loading up my ritual intent to make my first loaf of Samhain barmbrack with the New Moon of the witches' month of Lughnasadh, which falls on July 21st this year.

Irish barmbrack (báirín breac), similar to Welsh bara brith, is a traditional yeasted tea bread prepared by witches for Samhain divinatory rituals. The authentic traditional Irish recipe below comes from Mike Lewis.

Barmbrack is usually baked in a round cake tin. I use a 20 cm (8 in) tin with a loose base, but the recipe works just as well with a rectangular loaf tin. The quantities given here will make one large loaf.

* 2 tea bags, or 3 tsp. loose tea (a strong black blend works best)
* 3½ cups (12 oz, 350 g) mixed dried fruit (raisins, golden raisins/sultanas, currants, candied peel)
* 1 cup (8 fl oz, 240 ml) milk
* 1 tsp. sugar
* 2 tsp. dried active yeast (not instant yeast)
* 3 cups (1 lb, 450 g) strong bread flour (I usually use white flour but you can also use a mixture of white and wheat meal)
* 1 tsp. salt
* ¼ cup (1 oz, 25 g) brown sugar
* 1/3 cup (3 oz, 75 g) butter or margarine
* 1 beaten egg
* 1 tsp. mixed spice (equal parts of ground cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, allspice and mace, for example)

Oven: Pre-heat to 350F (180C).

Start by making two cups (16 fl oz, 480 ml) of strong black tea. Remove the tea bags, or strain the tea to remove the leaves. Soak the dried fruit in the tea. Ideally, the fruit should soak for several hours or even overnight, but if this is not possible, don't worry - just leave it soaking for as long as you can.

Warm the milk until it is hand-hot (you can do this in the microwave). Stir in the teaspoon of sugar and the yeast, and leave in a warm place for about 15 minutes or until it becomes frothy.

Mix the flour, salt and brown sugar in a large bowl. Rub in the butter or margarine. Add the frothy yeast, the beaten egg and the spice. Drain any remaining liquid from the fruit, then add the fruit to the mixture. Mix well to make a smooth dough (add extra flour if the mixture is too wet).

Turn the dough onto a floured board and knead it thoroughly. Place it in an oiled tin, cover with a cloth, and leave in a warm place to rise for 45 - 60 minutes; the dough should have doubled in size.

Place the tin in the oven and bake for about 30 minutes. Remove the loaf from the tin, turn it upside down and put it back in the tin or directly on the oven shelf. Bake for another 20 minutes or so. The loaf will be ready when it sounds hollow when you tap (atap tap tap) on each of the sides. Cool the loaf on a wire rack before serving.

Recipe for Barmbrack (August 2005)

For Samhain observance, before the final rise of the bread, place meaningful parchment or greaseproof paper wrapped charms in equal intervals throughout the bread mixture. Some traditional charms include a bean, a coin, a thimble or pea, a button, a matchstick, a gold ring and a snippet of cloth. Here are the meanings this wycked witch has attached to the charms for my divinations:

fava bean - contact with the Ancestors
silver pentacle dime - protected success and prosperity
thimble or pea - steadfast fidelity and connection to one's core truth
celtic knot button - open map to pathways in the soul
matchstick - a warm home and cozy hearth
gold ring - clear path to the heart
snippet of linen cloth - weaving together destiny

Samhain barmbrack is in opposite harmony with Pesach matzot. It is magically important that Samhain barmbrack be prepared as a yeasted bread - don't be tempted to use self-raising flour, baking soda or other chemical rising agents.

Beltane Fire Ritual Oil

Draw Down The Moon With Red Thread Witch Tea

I've made the first blends of Red Thread Witch Tea. The first one is for my own use and is the one I used to perfect the exquisitely delicate recipe. The second one will be available for purchase March 29 at WITCHCRAFTS by Liorah Lleucu.

All of the ingredients of Red Thread Witch Tea are 100% certified organically grown and include: red saffron threads (stamens), cloves, cardamon pods, coriander seed, sweet cinnamon, stevia leaf and ancient forest black tea. The completed blend was burgundy wax-sealed during the planetary hour of the Moon in a 100 mL clear corked wide mouthed port jar, stamped with a gold brocade ink-highlighted pentacle, and adorned with a pewter spiral charm, a bronze 'shalshelet' charm, black tulle and red threads. Pictures of the finished product can be seen when it is listed for purchase at my etsy shoppe.

From the first blend (my own personal experimental blend), I earlier today had made myself a cup of Red Thread Witch Tea (using a black infuser tea cup, of course). Hours later, not knowing of the mad mysteries going on in my laboratory, my mother walked into the house exclaiming, "what is that smell!" She absolutely loved it and designated it excellent.

A Gift For The Land

The first master batch of Black Goddess Underworld Initiation Ritual Concoction has begun its first step of preparation.

The herbs were blended with the waning gibbous moon 90% full, on this auspicious Friday the 13th, during the planetary hour of Mars, with the Sun in the 22nd degree of the sign Pisces and in the 1st degree of the constellation Pisces. Kabbalistically, Pisces links to mysteries of the hidden world, brings forth into reality the 'sweet miracle' of laughter, and supports "expropriation of Divine lifeforce by the material realm" [ק].

Basic herb Master Batch recipe:

1 oz. blackthorn berries*
1 oz. hawthorne leaf/flower
1 oz. bloodroot pieces
1/2 oz. sweet cinnamon pieces

The next step (to be done on the Dark Moon on the 26th of March) will consist of soaking the herbal mixture in heated pomegranate seed oil to make an herbal infusion, and then allowing it to cool naturally. After cooling, portions of the master batch will be placed into smaller containers along with a naughty touch of lampblack. The container will then be sealed for purchase.

As a Black Goddess Underworld Initiation Ritual concoction, the liquid 'extract' of the concoction can be decocted by the purchaser for use as a ritual oil, while the remaining herbal material can be used as a gift to the Land during a Black Goddess Underworld Initiation ritual.

My concoction contains blackthorn berries which have a large very hard woody seed inside. Purchasers of the concoction may wish to harvest some of the whole seeds for other ritual uses.

*This hard to find ingredient, imported from the UK, was not sold to me as a certified organic product. All other ingredients are certified organic.

Alcohol Perfume Bases

Everclear beverage

Everclear has a higher ethanol to water ratio than Vodka, so essential oils will go into solution faster and the final blend will not be as cloudy using Everclear.

General Purpose Fixative For Use With Everclear Base

To one bottle of Everclear, add:

3 tablespoons of Orris Root
several chips of Benzoin (Styrax)
2 crushed Vanilla Beans
several chips of Sandalwood (optional)

Shake bottle every day for at least 3 months (the minimum length of time it takes the fixative properties to emerge). Other resins may be also be used, experiment - advanced fixative recipes are part of the secret of proprietary perfumery.

Shelf-Stable Oil Bases

The highest concentration of essential and absolute oils in your blends should be no more than 20% in proportion to base alcohol or oil, the classic French parfum concentration. This is approximately 20 drops total (adding up all drops of various essential oils) for every 4 mL base. However, this is too high a concentration for sensitive skin. I recommend a final solution of 20-30 mL base for the recipe – you may want to start with 10 mL of base in a 30 mL glass container, add the perfume components, and then fill to the top with base.

The components of will marry over time and thus I urge you to wait at least a few weeks before making adjustments to the recipe. For more advanced perfume making, you want to let your blend rest for a month, mixing once a day (if you can remember), and then finalizing the components. In this case, only fill your container 2/3 of the way, so you have room to change the composition later. You can also split the blend into two containers, change one version, and dilute to the top of each container once it has been perfected.

Collect rainwater during a night rain into a silver bowl. Place the collected rainwater into a clay ritual jar, cork it, and bring it inside before dawn (such that the rainwater is not directly touched by light from the sun).

During the next full moon, at night, take outside and pour the previously collected rainwater back into the silver bowl to collect light from the rays of the full moon. After charging the water with light from the moon, place the moon water back into the clay ritual jar, cork it, and bring the jar of moon water inside before dawn.

Use for lunar rituals and to promote psychic awareness.

A recipe for a candle dressing mixture for the Forest Dance full moon esbat candle. Into an almond carrier oil, add a pestle ground mixture of:

2 parts white sandalwood (manifestation)

My candle dressing mixture for this year's Forest Dance full moon was prepared during the planetary hour of Venus (corresponding to the magical hebrew letter kaf, associated with the power to actualize potential) with the moon 100% full. The esbat candle itself was also charged with a clear quartz crystal and ritually inscribed with my spell using hebrew and ogham letters. My esbat candle was ignited during the planetary hour of Mercury, corresponding to the magical hebrew letter pei and associated with the communication of esoteric knowledge.
