Sacred Holly King Pillar Candle |
The Holly King and Oak King are actually the same king who embodies a twin soul, each representing dual aspects of the Horned God. The Oak King, who represents the waxing year and rules from mid winter Solstice (Yule) to Summer Solstice (Litha), is triumphed over by his brother, the Holly King who rules from Litha to Yule, representing the waning year.
In his book The White Goddess, the author Robert Graves proposed that the mythic figure of the Holly King represents one half of the year, while the other is personified by his counterpart and adversary the Oak King: the two battle endlessly as the seasons turn. At Midsummer the Oak King is at the height of his strength, while the Holly King is at his weakest. The Holly King begins to regain his power, and at the Autumn Equinox, the tables finally turn in the Holly King's favor; he later vanquishes the Oak King at Yule. Graves identified a number of paired hero-figures which he believes are variants of this myth, including Lleu Llaw Gyffes and Gronw Pebr, Gwyn and Gwythr, Lugh and Balor, Balan and Balin, Gawain and the Green Knight, the robin and the wren, and even Jesus and John the Baptist.
The Holly King, also known as the Horned Lord of the Winterwood and Father Time, embodies occult knowledge and ancient mysteries.
The Oak King, also known as the Horned Lord of the Greenwood and a fertility god, embodies light, growth and expansion.
Germanic mythology links holly to Thor, god of thunder and lightning. A protective herb, the tiny spines along holly's leaves acts as electrical conductors to channel lightning strikes into the ground, protecting the tree and nearby objects. The Germanic counterpart to the Oak King is Frey.
The Celtic Ogham letter Tinne is associated with the Holly Tree, mastery, technical skill, magical technologies, the creative force, the forge, artistry, and immediacy in time. 'Of all the trees that are in the wood, the Holly bears the crown.'
The Celtic letter Duir is associated with the Oak Tree, strength, stability, firmness, endurance, leadership, truth, justice, foundations, sacred places, thresholds and gateways. The Horned God as Lord of the Greenwood wears a crown made of oak leaves and acorns and is often depicted as the oaken faced Green Man.
