In Old Norse Teutonic shamanic tradition, Ancestor to all, FRAU HOLLE is
the supreme and elder Earth Mother Goddess from whom all the Gods and
Goddesses came, even Odin. Also known as Hel, Hulda and Holda, FRAU
HOLLE is the Witch Queen, Matron of spinning and weaving, Mistress of
Wyrdworking, Leader of the wild hunt, and Patroness of prophetic
illumination. In the Teutonic mysteries, FRAU HOLLE (like Freyja) is a
Goddess whose prophetic Priestesses are known as Volvas, women who work
Seidr (witchcraft, seership and sorcery). The source of life power and
wisdom, FRAU HOLLE bestows well-being, abundance, protection, and
healing. Friday is her Holy Day, which begins on Thursday eve. The dark
half of the year is sacred to this ancient Old Goddess, especially Yule.
Riding the wind, FRAU HOLLE is a weather goddess - she creates life
sustaining snowfalls, creates awesome whirlwinds, and nourishes all life
with rainfall. The earliest known sources indicate that this
all-powerful Spinning Goddess spins the Fates of both the Deities and
Human Beings, indeed, she spins the Fates of everything through which
moves the breath of Life. Her spinning faeries are often found near
wells and water, usually by a "holey" stone that is a gateway to the
Otherworld.
